The Learning Center answers any questions you may have about Wi-Fi standards, speeds and how Wi-Fi range works. If your network has poor Wi-Fi range, the Learning Center will help you understand why and what you can do to fix it. Wi-Fi operates on wireless standards, defined by the IEEE, that ensure interoperability between products from different manufacturers. Each Wi-Fi standard has its own speed and distance specifications. Wireless speed (also known as throughput) is measured by the speed that data is transferred from one wireless connection to the next.

802.11ac and 802.11a work exclusively on the 5GHz band and 802.11ac is backwards compatible with 802.11a and 802.11n (5GHz only). 802.11b and 802.11g work exclusively on the 2.4GHz band and 802.11g is backwards compatible with 802.11b. 802.11n works on both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz bands and is backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g.

Wi-Fi range has a direct effect on Wi-Fi speeds. The further out you go on a Wi-Fi network the more your Wi-Fi speed degrades until you no longer have a connection.

Therefore, the key to overall Wi-Fi performance is making sure you have enough Wi-Fi range. Wi-Fi range can be affected by several factors:

  1. Interference Environment:

    Your wireless environment plays a large role in determining the performance of your wireless network. Wi-Fi products operate optimally in a point to point scenario where there are no obstructions between the Wi-Fi Access Point/Router and your Wi-Fi adapter (PC, IPad, IPhone, etc.). Many items within your wireless environment can cause wireless performance to degrade.

    This items include:
    1. Microwaves
    2. Nearby Wi-Fi networks operating in the same channel frequency as your Wi-Fi network
    3. Metal objects and metallic tinted windows
    4. General Obstructions
  2. Wi-Fi Radio Strength:

    Each Wi-Fi product includes a wireless radio that transmits (Tx) and receives (Rx) wireless signals. The range performance of a Wi-Fi product is determined by the transmitting power and receiving sensitivity of the Wi-Fi radio inside the product. For optimal range and performance, both the Wi-Fi Access Point/Router and Wi-Fi adapter (PC, iPad, iPhone, etc.) must have strong transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) radios for a strong connection.

    Transmit

    If only the transmitting power is strong and the receiving sensitivity is weak, then the Wi-Fi product and overall network performance is only as strong as its weakest link. In other words, if you have a Wi-Fi product that has poor transmitting power (Tx) then your Wi-Fi range will only go as far as the transmitting power on the Wi-Fi radio will allow.

  3. Wi-Fi Antennas:

    Each Wi-Fi radio includes a Wi-Fi antenna to send out its Wi-Fi signal. Wi-Fi antennas shape the pattern of your wireless signal and help to increase the transmitting power (Tx) of your Wi-Fi product. (Wi-Fi Antennas do not boost your Wi-Fi products receiving sensitivity (Rx)). Different antennas may be used to help concentrate the Wi-Fi signal of your product in a single direction for more wireless transmitting power (Tx) and more range.

Wireless performance and range can be boosted beyond Wi-Fi standard specifications through the use of Amped Wireless' range amplifying technology and high power Wi-Fi antennas:

Wi-Fi Power Amplifiers

  1. Standard Wi-FiEach Wi-Fi product includes a wireless radio that transmits (Tx) and receives (Rx) wireless signals.

    The range performance of a Wi-Fi product is determined by the output power (Tx and Rx strength) of the wireless radio inside the product. Wireless radio output power is measured by mili-watts (mW) and the typical Wi-Fi product has a wireless output power of 50mW.





  2. High Power AmplifierAll Amped Wireless High Power Wi-Fi products include wireless radios that feature high power amplifiers to boost the transmit power (Tx) AND receiving sensitivity (Rx) output power of the radio. Therefore, adding a single Amped Wireless Wi-Fi product will help to increase the overall performance of your network by boosting both the transmitting power and the receiving sensitivity of the Wi-Fi product. Amped Wireless' Wi-Fi products include wireless radios that feature wireless output power from 100mW to the 1000mW (the FCC Maximum allowable limit). That's 2x to 20x the typical wireless output power of standard Wi-Fi products!









  3. Green StandardsAmped Wireless' High Power Wi-Fi products feature signal filters and green power saving features to ensure a safe and clean Wi-Fi operating environment. Although the output power of Amped Wireless High Power Wi-Fi products is higher than standard Wi-Fi products, they are tested and certified to be as safe, if not safer, than typical Wi-Fi products in the market today.


Wi-Fi High Power Antennas

  1. Low Power AntennaEach Wi-Fi radio includes a Wi-Fi antenna to send out its Wi-Fi signal. Wi-Fi antennas shape the pattern of your wireless signal and help to increase the range of wireless transmissions from your Wi-Fi product. The strength (a.k.a. gain) of a Wi-Fi antenna is measured by decibels (dBm). Typical Wi-Fi products feature internal antennas with decibel levels of zero (0) dBm. The higher the strength (dBm) of an antenna the more concentrated signal from the radio will be, thus increasing overall range.




  2. ua600All Amped Wireless High Power Wi-Fi products include external, detachable antennas for more wireless range. Internal antennas do not perform as well as antennas that are placed on the outside of a product. Amped Wireless High Power Wi-Fi products feature High Power antennas that are tuned specifically for use with the amplified Wi-Fi radios of each Amped Wireless Wi-Fi product. Amped Wireless products feature antennas with decibel levels between 3dBm and 12dBm. That's up to 3x to 12x the antenna strength (decibel level) of standard Wi-Fi products! Amped Wireless' High Power antennas are also detachable for Wi-Fi applications that require upgraded antennas, such as for outdoor applications.

 

How Wi-Fi Smart Repeaters Work

Wi-Fi Smart Repeaters connect to any Wi-Fi network (you would need to know the security key if you are connecting to a secure network) and redistributes the Wi-Fi connection in the location where the Wi-Fi Smart Repeater is located. Simply put, Wi-Fi Smart Repeaters repeat the signal from another Wi-Fi network effectively extending the range of the Wi-Fi network.
